ICE South Branch Construction Awards 2009
At this years ICE South Branch Construction Awards BAM Ritchies
entry Copyhold Cutting Slope Stablilisation was highly commended
in the Geoffrey Osborne award for Innovation.
The Network Rail project involved critical cutting stabilisation
work on a main railway line between London and Brighton. The
work was required following
a series of landslides which occurred between 2006 and 2007
which led to a speed restriction causing delays to passengers
using the railway.
Prior to the design stage, `Panda Probing' was undertaken
to determine the weathered mudstone profile, while innovative
drilling rigs enabled drilling on the steep, inaccessible
slope. An optimum design using tailored facing, clever methods
of control and roped access negated costly possessions ensuring
value for money.
This whole project was delivered safely to time and budget
minimising environmental impact through the knowledge, skills
and expertise of the whole project team working collaboratively
together. In addition to the excellent HSQE performance, train
operations and thus delays were unaffected during the works.

The judges said: "This was a quality entry hitting the
right notes on excellence, safety, environmental consideration
and client service. It demonstrated a good mix of project
examples,: company systems in place to monitor client satisfaction
and feedback on good practice, and examples of general industry
involvement."
Construction News also noted BAM Ritchies’ contribution
to the difficult parts of the industry, along with its passion
for ground engineering as praised by the judges.
The Specialists Awards is one of the construction industry's

GE Awards 2009
Award Winners at Ground Engineering Awards
BAM Ritchies were winners at the Ground Engineering Awards
2009 held in London in February.
BAM Ritchies' entry - Copyhold Cutting - Slope Stabilisation
- won the UK project up to £1M category Award. The Network
Rail project was to stabilise the 200m long Copyhold Cutting
on the London to Brighton railway line to reduce the risk
of landslips. BAM Nuttall working with BAM Ritchies regraded
the top, highly weathered, section removing, 6000t of spoil
using long-reach excavators, reducing the slope angle from
50° to 30°. BAM Ritchies then installed raking anchors,
micropiles, soil nails and face and toe anchors using excavator-mounted
and rope-supported drill rigs. All work was done without possessions
nor disruption to normal rail traffic.
What the judges said: This solution incorporated a variety
of innovative and well considered design and construction
features. In particular, the project involved successful management
of the health, safety and environmental issues." The
team at Copyhold Cutting - Slope Stabilisation also won the
Health & Safety Award. What the judges said: "This
wasn't just minimising health and safety risks, it was getting
rid of it — real solutions to real health and safety
problems."
BAM Ritchies were also Highly Commended in the Technical
Excellence Award for the Dounreay Shaft Isolation Project.
A high-quality grout curtain sealed the contaminated 65m deep
shaft at Dounreay nuclear facility in Scotland from surrounding
ground water. What the judges said: An extremely challenging
project which involved many successful trials prior to coming
up with the solution."

Saltire Award for Clunie Dam Post Tensioning
The Clunie Dam Post Tensioning contract undertaken by BAM
Ritchies for client Scottish and Southern Energy has recently
been awarded a prestigious Saltire Society/Institution of
Civil Engineering Construction Commendation Award.
The citation states” The commendation was made in recognition
of skills, ingenuity and excellence in construction design
of this innovative project. The meticulous planning and construction
process delivered an economical Civil Engineering Project
in a challenging confined area.”
This award was given to BAM Ritchies and Scottish and Southern
Energy at the awards ceremony in Glasgow recently.
This is the second award the contract has received. In February
the project achieved the accolade of Private Sector Project
under £1million Ground Engineering 2008 Award in London.
The work involved drilling and installing 23 vertical rock
anchors through the gravity sections of Clunie Dam in Perthshire,
Scotland. The anchors varied in capacity from 1400kN to 2500kN
(10 – 17strand) and lengths between 11m and 40m.
The key points that made this job exceptional included:-
- Work undertaken despite very restricted access
- The works were completed with excellent safety measures
and without accident
- Normally helicopters would be used for this type of work
but despite the very restricted access the work was completed
using special and floating plant. This reduced environmental
impacts of high fuel use and noise
- There was meticulous planning of the works
- Innovative techniques were used to safely construct the
works
- Good value of money for the client
- Very high client satisfaction
GE Awards 2008
Award Winners at Ground Engineering Awards
BAM Ritchies were double award winners at the inaugural Ground
Engineering Awards 2008 held in London in February.
The two awards, one in the private sector and one in the
public sector at different ends of the country, confirm BAM
Ritchies as the leading UK geotechnical contractor.
These achievements are a reflection on the hard work and
capability of all BAM Ritchies team members along with a management
system that ensures that clients are provided with industry
leading project performances.
A40 & M50 Rock Slope Stabilisations
BAM Ritchies' entry – A40 & M50 Rock Slope Stabilisations
- was the winner of the Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental Public
Sector Project under £1M category at the inaugural 2008
Ground Engineering Awards.
The work involved the stabilisation of rock slopes near Ross-on-Wye
using rock bolts, tensioned high strength mesh, rock fall
netting, dentition and sprayed concrete.
The judges commented - ‘BAM Ritchies’ successful
application of agile team working and partnering to bring
in a scheme with a changing brief, was on time and on budget
while being in the full glare of the motoring public’.
RoSPA Gold
BAM Ritchies are proud to have been awarded a RoSPA Gold Award.
This award is a reflection of the robust Health and Safety
management system in place within BAM Ritchies together with
significant improvements in incident frequency, resulting
from team members constant efforts to improve Health and Safety
performance on all our sites.
DSRL HSE Award
BAM Ritchies Dounreay Shaft Isolation contract was a winner
of one of the Dounreay Director’s Safety, Health and
Environment awards.
Clunie Dam Post Tensioning
BAM Ritchies' entry - Clunie Dam Post Tensioning - was the
winner of the Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental Private Sector
Project under £1M category at the inaugural 2008 Ground
Engineering Awards.
The work involved the installation of 23 vertical multi-strand
permanent anchors through the gravity sections of Clunie Dam
in Perthshire, Scotland. The anchors varied in capacity from
1400kN to 2500kN (10 – 17 strand) and lengths between
11m and 40m.
The judges said - ‘This is a demonstration of lateral
thinking to deliver an innovative solution. Work at the top
of the dam with its restricted access had previously used
helicopters. But BAM Ritchies decision to use a high power
mini-rig for drilling, and floating plant for coiled anchors
without pre-grouted fixed lengths, meant the solution lowered
costs and environmental impact’.
In addition, BAM Ritchies’ Director and General Manager
was pleased to present the Health and Safety Award at the
event, which was attended by over 300 people.
Safety and Environmental Awards
Safe Site 2008
BAM Ritchies’ Clunie Dam site was awarded the BAMNuttall
Safe Site 2008 Award for contracts less than £1 million.
This is the third time in the last five years that BAM Ritchies
