BAM Ritchies

Case Study: Flax Bourton Cutting Stabilisation – Phase 5

Location: Near Bristol

Client: Network Rail

Designer: Donaldson Associates

Main Contractor: Carillion

Date: 2007

This contract was a continuation of the works and techniques developed from phases 3 and 4.

The design involved a grid of crest and face dowels/nails with Geobrugg TECCO® mesh providing a high strength tensioned flexible facing.

Ritchies continued with the development and improvements to the Terrapin face rigs, drilling masts and rotation heads.

The temporary anchors for face rig winching systems were redesigned owing to the loss of access into adjacent land not owned by Network Rail.

Extra work was incorporated into the scheme when a small slip occurred with no delay to the existing deadline.

  • Number of nails and dowels 1,692
  • Number of drains 81
  • Area of TECCO® Mesh 11,500m²
  • Area of Enkamat 1,350m²
  • Number of temporary anchors 108

There was no disruption to railway operations and only a small number of possessions were required.
