BAM Ritchies

Case Study: St Thomas Viaduct - Arch Strengthening

Location: Exeter

Client: Network Rail

Main Contractor: Southern Zone Construction

Partnership Consultant: White Young Green

Date: 2006

Ritchies worked up to and on Christmas Day to strengthen two brick arches that had suffered general loss of bricks, mortar loss, and brickwork spalling.

The works involved cleaning the soffits by water jetting and / or grit blasting, fixing fin drains, drilling and fixing “L” bars and fixing A393 mesh to the “L” bars.

Approximately 150mm thick sprayed concrete was applied to the soffits and left “as sprayed”.

In addition, a new reinforced concrete sidewall was constructed in one arch. This was undertaken using the sprayed concrete method and trowelled to profile.
