BAM Ritchies

Training

Academy training

The role of the academy

BAM Nuttall has developed its own award winning Academy to deliver quality training to all employees, which includes those working within the BAM Ritchies Division. All programmes are designed to meet high standards of delivery and support. They are reviewed regularly to guarantee they meet business needs, complement one another, are cost effective and support our journey to Beyond Zero.

Employee’ expectations

The Academy offers modular programmes, which are tailored to individual needs together with advice and guidance. The training offered forms a major part of an individual’s career development and is delivered by experts in their field.

The Academy Standard

New standards in training delivery and content have been devised with an emphasis on the establishment of a network of specialist in-house trainers. Training is delivered in an engaging way that’s in line with our Beyond Zero culture. The Academy Standard sets out how all BAM Nuttall programmes should be designed, the programme content, and the how a trainer should deliver the programme is in line with our Company Values.

ELearning

The Academy Standard goes beyond classroom training into eLearning as part of our blended learning approach. This method of delivery supports one of the main elements of our company Vision that of being Sustainable. Our eLearning programme is web based and is available to access anywhere, anytime on a variety of different devices.

The modules have been designed and developed internally to meet business needs. They cover key topic areas, including safety and the environment to support knowledge and raise awareness.

Vocational training

Employees are encouraged to develop their skills by participating in vocational training programmes. We have been providing qualifications to both direct and supply chain employees since 2000. Our team of vocational trainers deliver a range of qualifications through our accredited centres covering NVQ’s for construction and minerals processing as well as ILM qualifications, and internal training courses.

NVQ’s

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ’s) are work based awards that are achieved through training and assessment. To gain an NVQ, candidates must prove that they have the ability (competence) to carry out their job to the specified standard. NVQ’s are derived from National Occupational Standards that specify the competence requirements for all occupations at all levels.

VRQ’s

Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs) are work related qualifications helping candidates to develop their knowledge and skills. They are normally knowledge-based qualifications providing learners with the theoretical knowledge behind their chosen occupation. These nationally recognised qualifications are designed to bring real business benefits through the strong focus on practical skills and assessment.

We are accredited for the training and assessment of construction related Institute of Leadership and Management VRQs.

Information Advice and Guidance (IAG)

We hold Matrix accreditation for information, advice and guidance. The Matrix standard is the national quality standard for the delivery of advice and support services helping individuals in their learning, career and work goals.

Our IAG mission is to provide clear, consistent, impartial and confidential information, advice and guidance to potential and current learners to enable them to make sure that our programmes meet their needs.

Our target client base for IAG is our direct employees, our supply chain employees and employers. Our delivery of IAG is limited to our occupational area to meet our company values. Feedback is reviewed by programme managers and is used to make improvements.

Industry Card Schemes

BAM Nuttall Ltd, through our Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) membership is committed to meeting industry targets of maintaining a competent workforce at all levels who are qualified and CSCS/CPCS registered.

Your time will be divided between being on-site and in the office, as required, working on a variety of projects to ensure you get a broad base on which to build your career. Supporting this, we want to make sure you get a full understanding of the way we work – as we’re hoping you’ll be the senior managers of the future. To do this you will receive regular mentoring that allows you to gain significant ‘on-the-job’ experience, complemented by formal training courses.

In BAM Ritchies we actively encourage career paths that lead to membership of recognised professional institutions. As such our graduate training is approved and monitored by the following professional institutions:

  • ICE
  • ICES
  • IOM3

Support can be provided with other professional bodies such as the Geological Society, the Institute of Quarrying and the UK Register of Ground Engineering Professionals (RoGEP).

How is the programme delivered?

The programme begins with our graduate induction which is held every autumn and is both informative and fun. This comprises:

  • Welcome and Introduction to BAM Nuttall / BAM Ritchies
  • Introduction to professional bodies
  • Team building

The programme combines practical on the job experience with formal management, commercial, technical and safety health and environmental training. On the programme you will be assigned an experienced professional body mentor who will guide you to develop clear goals, expand your skills and assist you in working towards professional qualification.

When you attend the regular training with your peers you will have the opportunity to network and have additional support with your professional development.

You will be required to provide quarterly performance reviews which will be completed with the help of your mentor through the duration of the programme which will be produced with the help of your mentor.

After the three years you will continue to benefit from the ongoing support of both your mentor and the graduate development team to complete your professional qualification.

In parallel with the programme you will also be included in the BAM Nuttall Competency Framework which is mandatory for all personnel. All of this will see you developed technically, commercially and prepare you for potential managerial opportunities in the future, supported by our emerging and sustainable leaders programmes.
