BAM Ritchies join IQ CPC scheme
Following the introduction of the IQ Corporate Professional Competence (CPC) scheme, BAM Ritchies almost instantly showed a keen interest in taking part. Following discussions with Mike Phillips of the Institute, it quickly became apparent that the hard work, structure, training and commitment of their employees meant this was the obvious next move in a world that increasingly requires competency of the people who undertake work within it.

BAM Ritchies are the largest drilling and blasting contractors operating in the UK quarrying industry. They employ over 60 people in this part of their business and provide services to most of the major quarry operators and many of the smaller independent companies.

The company has been providing this service for almost 40 years, and during this time has constantly striven to develop and innovate with new products and equipment, alongside the development and training of its employees. In 2007 Ritchies passed a major milestone having blasted over half a billion tonnes in hard rock quarries in the UK.

Ian Dalgleish, director of BAM Ritchies, was pleased to accept member certificate 003, presented to him by David Sharman, President of the Institute, at the most recent meeting of Council held in February.

Ian said 'As an organization, we are absolutely committed to maintaining professional standards and training and developing our people, so complying with the obligations of the scheme was straightforward. To have a scheme which independently audits our adherence to it and our staff's CPD record is of great

value to us.

'Two of the more senior staff in our drilling and blasting business, Ian Christie and Glyn Barnes, have recently been awarded Level 4 SHE NVQs to further reinforce our commitment to safety, health and the environment.

'The knowledge, skills and competency that are gained by individuals from our UK operations allow us to undertake specialist work overseas, working in joint ventures with our sister companies worldwide. At present, those activities involve operating quarries in Tanzania and Sri Lanka, as well as marine drilling and blasting in Australia, Sweden and South America.

In addition to their drilling and blasting business, BAM Ritchies are one of the major specialist geotechnical contracting companies in the UK, providing ground engineering and ground investigation services across many sectors of construction.
